Nature and Wildlife should be part of our education

Nature and Wildlife should be part of our education system

Nature and Wildlife should be part of our education system . It should be taught at schools just like the other basic subjects. So as to help kids appreciate and understand more about them from the beginning.

Giving Nature a Voice

Giving Nature a Voice

It’s a programme in Kenya that helps spread conservation education and awareness among the communities. They help young conservationists come up with ideas, help them develop a film and show it on the media. It’s a great tool and support for conservation.

I was lucky to attend one of their meetings yesterday. Whereby they were luncing their next season of films. It was a great experience. Meeting with conservationist across all ages and races. It’s like a cocktail of determined conservationists. Ready to cause positive developments in the world of conservation.

Several people got an opportunity to explain few topics on the conservation status in our country. Aired out the challenges as well as the victories.

The young ones are embracing conservation

The youngsters are embracing conservation too.

There was a group of young students in attendance. They were very vocal and didn’t shy to air out their ideas.

They wondered why wildlife was not taught at schools and wished that would change. They want such important issues to be part of their learning at schools.

I was moved by how good they had researched on the current status of various species in the world. They knew which species were at the verge of extinction. And also understand very well , that media can be a game changer in all these.

They explained how media can be used to help many understand basic information about wildlife and nature. And the fact that, currently, media moves information around in a lightening speed.

So I thought to myself, if those kids learnt about wildlife from few meetings and got that attached to them. To a point of creating their own group to create awareness. What would happen if it was part of their education. How much could they be able to do for the wildlife and nature.

It will also reach those schools in other towns outside Nairobi. Hence extending the coverage.

Education is the Key, Knowledge is Power

These words never miss in all graduations. Our teachers, lectures and proffesors making known to us that we are now ready to tackle the future with a smile. Since we have the tools.

Nature and wildlife are important part of our existence and it’s time we stop ignoring it.

When we are equipped with the correct information on the two.

  • We will understand where we stand as a planet.
  • Know what to avoid doing or what to modify to be sustainable.
  • Understand and appreciate existence of various species and physical environment.
  • Understand impact of the various humane activities on the environment.
  • Among many others.

Conclusion

Technology is excellent and Lets use it to make our planet healthy again.

Lets use media to spread and create conservation education and awareness.

Youngsters are the saviors of our species. Lets equip them with the correct and adequate information.

Lets introduce our kids to the wildlife and nature.

I hope our education experts and decision makers will consider these thoughts

  1. Totally agree. Let me narrate a little experience. A stray cat comes to our house and wants food. Other day I was giving it a share of milk, my teenage daughter was surprised that a stray cat does not bite! Such is the amount of distrust and misconception. I think by including nature and ecology as part of curriculum, teaching student how animals feel pain, fear, hunger, love like humans, we may be able to create a sensitive and humane society. Take kids to zoos, those who can afford to reserve forests and make them learn about nature and wildlife.

    1. Exactly, they will have an opportunity to be exposed to the true facts about animals. Thank you very much for that example, it does bring out the need to include nature and wildlife in our lives.

  2. Thoroughly agree with the messages here. Youngsters in my home country are becoming increasingly disconnected from nature and it’s not their fault. Give them a chance through education and they will engage.

    1. Very true. Once they have been equipped with the right information about nature, they will be in a position to have a reason to connect with as well as protect it.
