Rethinking Bulk Food Shopping

#30DayChallenge for a better and healthier planet, Eliminate food waste.

Rethinking Bulk Food Shopping

Rethinking Bulk Food Shopping. This is in the spirit of reducing food waste. Hence making Zero Food Waste a reality.

Bulk Food Shopping is cheap

Do you remember of the say that informs us, Cheap is expensive.

It is true that when you shop your food in bulk. You are able to save some coins. Hence important economically.

In almost all the articles on savings, advise us to almost buy everything in bulk.

What does one learn from the cleaning of the pantry and fridges?

We see food being thrown away because they have expired. Lots of food products make their way into the dustbins.

Then we refill with more food. Not giving a thought of what just happened. What crazy amount of food, we just threw away.

What should we rethink while shopping food in bulk?

What amount of food does your family consume?

Before we can embrace buying food in bulk. You have to first understand the amounts needed. What your family can consume without wasting any of it.

This can be achieved by buying limited amounts and getting to know how much is needed. Just like we have to observe our spending so as to know the funds needed to take us through. Same should be done while shopping for food.

You don’t need to buy 10 kilograms of rice if your family can only consume 5 kilograms. Or a whole sack of potatoes, yet you will only manage to consume a quarter of the supply.

The aim of buying food in bulk is to save cash. But if most of it ends up in the dumpsite. Are we really saving anything?

Plus we are contributing to the emission of the greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

How does Food Waste contribute to Climate Change

Once the food waste makes their way into the final destination and rot, they produce methane. A greenhouse gas that is more harmful than carbon dioxide.

This methane emission is preventable by ensuring that we stop wasting any food.

We also end up wasting the whole process of making that food ready for consumption. From farming, preparation and finally the market processes.

Conclusion

For #ZeroFoodWaste campaign to become a reality, it has to start from our shopping list. Just because it’s cheap to buy in bulk, doesn’t mean you buy more than you need.

If we are to take good care of what we are already producing, we may not really need to produce more. The human population is bursting out and more food is needed to feed this growing numbers. But sadly, in some parts, we are wasting too much of it.

Embrace ways that help to lower/ eliminate your food waste rate. They are simple and anyone willing can be able to ensure that we have zero food waste in our homes.

From there, we will also urge hotels and any organizations that work in food production to do the same.

It all starts with you and me. In the spirit of zero food waste, let us not shop for what we can’t manage to consume.

  1. I mostly agree with what you say. But there are two other points to consider when buying small quantities: does this increase the packaging? and does it increase my use of petrol, making more frequent trips to the shops? If we buy loose goods, i.e., unpackaged, and the shops are accessible by walking or public transport, I’d say you have the right idea.

    1. Very true. The small quantities is to evaluate how much you can consume. The after that we can now be able to buy enough for the family. Because we also dont want unnecessary emmission from trasport used. We should also also be able to have the reusable environment friendly packaging. Its a tricky one that really needs balancing of all involved elements.
