Emu

Emu is the second-largest living bird by height, closely behind their relative Ostrich. They are endemic to Australia. Meaning, they are native and restricted to Australia.

Just like an ostrich, Emu is unable to fly but has incredible speed. They weigh more than 45 kilograms and stand up to 1.5 meters high. They are covered by soft fluffy feathers.

They have a lifespan of up to 20 years in the wild.

One interesting fact is that they have two sets of eyelids. One for keeping the dust out while the other one for blinking.

I once confused them for ostrich, thanks to a friend who correct me.

Birds versus other wildlife

Unlike mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and other huge wildlife. They could be harder to comprehend and identify.

They come in all shapes, colors and uniqueness.

Birdwatching helps the process. They help you get closer to them, learn more about them and about their uniqueness.

Its advisable that to do so with the help of experienced birdwatchers or guides. Guide books may not be too fun in the field. Plus, some birds may hid well to only have you hear their songs/voices.

Sadly, as we continued to clear trees in our neighourhood. We ended up chasing bird away. They had nowhere to build their nests, or do what they do best.

Some adapted, and started building their nests on our roofs.

Slowly, people are correcting this. By building bird feeders in their backyards, small birdhouses, and re-introducing vegetation in their homes. Bringing the birds back to us.

Conclusion

Nature has a way of bouncing back. It just needs a small help, and it will do the rest.
